Meet Sophie and Sarah who are taking on the Real Channel Swim for Aspire!

Hello!

We’re Sophie and Sarah, and this year we’re taking part in Aspire’s Real Channel Swim challenge. As part of a team of 6 (Team Seal!), we’re going to swim the 22 miles from Dover to France in August 2012. We’ve always been keen swimmers and cannot wait to take on “the Everest of swimming”! We’re aiming to raise over £3500 for Aspire and we’re doing this in a variety of different ways...

We’ve been making...

...we’ve been baking...

...and we’ve been car-booting!

So far we’ve raised over £1000. To get to our £3500 target we’ve got lots more ideas up our sleeves; we’re organising street collections in Liverpool and Leeds City Centres, holding bag packs at our local shopping centres...and we MIGHT be running a 10k race dressed as a seals. Maybe.

We’ve also been training hard, swimming between 4 and 6 times per week, covering distances of up to 6km in the pool. We’re looking forward to getting back out into the open water as soon as possible too; Sophie swims with the jellyfish in the Albert Dock in Liverpool every week and Sarah is trying desperately to find a regular outdoor swimming spot – a bit tricky in the middle of Leeds! We’ll also be ‘forcing’ our loved ones out on regular weekends away to take advantage of the many lovely outdoor swimming locations around the country. To spur us on towards the Channel in August, we’ve both signed up for the Great North Swim 2-miler in Windermere on the 22nd June.

Why did we choose to fundraise for Aspire? Meeting people who have been affected by spinal injury and hearing them talk about how Aspire has helped them to recover and go on to achieve incredible things was really motivational; we want to help Aspire continue to be able to do what they do, and to be there to help everyone who needs them. Aspire are also a fantastic charity to fundraise for – they provide a wide variety of exciting, accessible events to take part in, update and encourage at every step and offer support and guidance to fundraisers. Sarah completed the Aspire Channel Swim in the pool in 2010, and couldn’t wait to find another swimming event to be a part of!
